Kale smoothie -- move over. There's a new drink warden in town, and I'm not talking about ingesting bleach.
When applied topically, alcohol has natural disinfectant properties. Honey tames the throat and is antibacterial in nature. Lemon is high in vitamin C. Throw in some elderberry syrup -- which has been shown to decrease flu duration and severity of viral symptoms -- and you've got yourself a winner.
Enter: The Quarantini.
If you've ever needed an excuse to drink alone, come forward now without shame.
This recipe is a spin on the classic Bees Knees, a gin drink reminiscent of the Prohibition era. The sweet honey and lemon were designed to mask the taste of cheap bathtub gin. It tastes infinitely better with the top shelf variety.
Now here's how to whip up that drink.

Quarantini ingredients
- 1 lemon (squeezed)
- 2 tsp elderberry syrup
- 2 oz gin
- 2 oz honey simple syrup (2 parts honey dissolved in 1 part warm water)
- grenadine
- 1 lemon
Steps

Start by filling up a glass with ice.

Add 2 oz of gin.

Add the juice of one squeezed lemon.

Add two teaspoons of elderberry syrup. We bought ours at our local grocery store, or you can order some here. Elderberry syrup has a sweet, spicy flavor like blackberry jam with hints of allspice.

Add 2 oz of honey syrup. Honey syrup is just warmed up honey mixed with water in 1:1 proportion.

Optional: if you like your drink on the sweeter side, add a bit of grenadine to taste.

Shake your concoction well and strain into a chilled glass.

Add lemon zest for garnish. For an additional vitamin C boost, try chasing your drink with a shot of lemon juice!
As always drink responsibly, and enjoy this yummy pandemic punch~
